Fixed Gear
I’ve always been into skateboarding, surfing, and snowboarding – alternative sports that lead me to the next thrill. That all changed when my daughter was born. Now standing on a skateboard makes me nervous. The thought of snowboarding terrifies me.
In an attempt to reclaim some of that “fearlessness” – and get some exercise – I bought a fixed gear (brakeless) bike. At the start of every biking season, I feel a tremendous amount of anxiety and have to really motivate myself to overcome it and get out on that first ride. The methodical process of servicing the bike – taking it apart, cleaning it, and putting it all back together – is one way that I deal with the anxiety and prepare myself for the change of landscape.
Here are photographs of that process.
